How do I reduce noise coming through an apartment window?

The first thing to check if you have a lot of noise coming through your apartment windows is the windows themselves. Look for cracks, gaps that need caulking, and other basic repairs.

Maintenance alone will not eliminate intrusive noise in your apartment.

There are several methods for reducing the sound coming through an apartment window. The easiest is to hang soundproofing curtains. This is a good option for light sleepers when combined with soundproofing windows.

You may see articles advising you to plug your window with foam, matting, and wood. Don’t use this method for soundproofing your window. It blocks your natural light. It also makes the window non-functional, creating a significant safety hazard.

The best option is soundproof window inserts that work with existing windows. CitiQuiet soundproof window inserts block up to 95% of intrusive noise without altering the form or function of your existing windows.

Our windows are fully operational and removable. They are installed in the existing window frame. They offer soundproofing without sacrificing light or safety.

Does CitiQuiet use rollers?

CitiQuiet windows use a roller system to facilitate smooth motions when opening and closing every type of unit. This is one of the great advantages of our sound proof windows as they require less effort to open and close. CitiQuiet uses sealed bearing rollers to facilitate this smooth operation whereas some copycat windows have a steel on steel solution which creates friction and resistance when trying to open and close their windows. Beware of misleading sales reps that try to sell this as an advantage when most everyone knows friction causes resistance and does not lend itself to an effortless experience like the sealed bearings in CitiQuiet Soundproof Windows. CitiQuiet Windows will not become dirty as quickly or as often as other windows. The windows are interior and are not exposed to the outside elements. Why Are Our Windows so Effective in Eliminating Noise?

Our windows are constructed with laminated glass to help stop sound vibrations and provide extra insulation. All of our designs offer ENERGY efficiency. They are installed into the existing interior opening (on the window sill) a few inches away from the existing window, creating a space of dead air that helps to isolate the CitiQuiet frame from sound vibrations and add a cushion of air between the two. It is this cushion of air working in conjunction with the CitiQuiet window that helps to eliminate noise. The simple installation does not require any construction or alterations.

What are sound transmission class ratings?

The American Society for Testing and Materials established sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings to help compare noise reduction products such as windows, doors, walls and building materials. STC ratings are measurements of sound isolation for various products. Measured in decibels, the STC rating is the average amount of noise resistance at 18 different frequencies. Each number in the rating System represents a significantly higher measurement than the one before, similar to the Richter Scale used to measure earthquakes. The higher the STC class rating is, the greater the noise reduction.

Typical Sound Transmission Class Ratings

  • 8″ Dense concrete block wall, 2 coats of paint each side: STC-52
  • 4″ Face brick, mortared together: STC-36
  • 1/2″ Gypsum board (both sides) to 35/8″ metal studs: STC-36
  • Acousta-Pane CitiQuiet Interior Window: STC-38
  • 1/2″ Laminated CitiQuiet Interior Window: STC-38
  • 1/2″ CitiQuiet Interior Window: STC-36
  • 1/4″ Laminated CitiQuiet Interior Window: STC-35
  • 1/4″ CitiQuiet Interior Window: STC-31
  • 1/8″ CitiQuiet Interior Window: STC-29
  • 3/32″ Standard wood frame window: STC-13
  • 3/32″ Standard steel casement window: STC-13

As you can see, a 3/32″ standard wood frame Window has an STC rating of 13 while a 1/4″ laminated CitiQuiet Interior Window has a rating of 35, a dramatic difference that will drastically enhance your interior living environment.
