Why Are Our Windows so Effective in Eliminating Noise?
- CitiQuiet Windows are constructed with laminated glass. Argon or Krypon gas is injected into the dead air space between the panes of glass to help stop sound vibrations and provide extra insulation. All CitiQuiet Windows are ENERGY efficient qualified.
- Our windows are installed into the existing window opening (on the window sill) a few inches away from the existing window, creating a space of dead air that isolates the CitiQuiet frame from sound vibrations. The simple installation does not require any construction or alteration to the existing window.
- The spacers are insulated with thermoplastics and glass panels are surrounded by spring-loaded seals that help stop any additional sound leaks.
Once installed, our soundproof windows work just like any window. They are fully operable and completely removable.

What are Sound Transmission Class Ratings?
Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings were established by the American Society for Testing and Materials to help compare noise reduction products such as windows, doors, walls and building materials. Sound Transmission Class ratings are measurements of sound isolation for various products.
Measured in decibels, the STC rating is the average amount of noise resistance at 18 different frequencies. Each number in the rating system represents a significantly higher measurement than the one before, similar to the Richter Scale used to measure earthquakes. The higher the STC class rating, the greater the noise reduction.
Typical Sound Transmission Class Ratings
- 8" Dense concrete block wall, 2 coats of paint each side: STC-52
- 4" Face brick, mortared together: STC-36
- 1/2" Gypsum board (both sides) to 35/8" metal studs: STC-36
- Acoust-A-Pane CitiQuiet interior window: STC-38
- 1/2" Laminated CitiQuiet interior window: STC-38
- 1/2" CitiQuiet interior window: STC-36
- 1/4" Laminated CitiQuiet interior window: STC-35
- 1/4" CitiQuiet interior window: STC-31
- 1/8" CitiQuiet interior window: STC-29
- 3/32" Standard wood frame window: STC-13
- 3/32" Standard steel casement window: STC-13
As you can see, a 3/32" standard wood frame window has an STC rating of 13 while a 1/4" laminated CitiQuiet interior window has a rating of 35! A dramatic difference that will drastically enhance your interior living environment.

Sound Transmission Class (STC) / Outdoor Indoor Transmission Class (OITC)
The STC rating was the original rating system developed to measure the sound privacy of interior building partitions from a variety of common sounds, and has more recently expanded to be used in rating external partitions as well. The STC rating is calculated within the frequency range of 125 to 5000 hertz (the range for sounds most frequent indoors such as speech, television, and office equipment). On a general level, the STC represents the decibel (dB) reduction in sound that a partition provides. The decibel scale is non-linear, but a 10 dB reduction in sound generally results in a sound being heard at about one-half of its initial level. The OITC rating system was developed due to an increased demand for measuring the acoustical performance of exterior building partitions against external sounds. The OITC rating is a logarithmic equation calculates within the frequency range of 80 to 5000 hertz, and weighted more heavily towards the lower end of the range (transportation sounds generally have frequencies around 80 hertz). The OITC rating can be generatlly interpreted as the A-weighted decibel reduction of sound that a partition provides.
